Dorsey's Knob
was known to generations of Native Americans as Sky Rock. The name came from George
Dorsey after purchasing the land from the family of the first settler of European
descent in the area, John Cobun. In the first half of the 20th Century, Dorsey's
Knob was a destination for residents taking leisure time walks and short hikes
from the First Ward area of Morgantown.
Sky Rock (Dorsey's Knob) was considered to be the highest point in the County before actual measurements demonstrated otherwise (elevation 1,438 ft.). It is a promontory
located in the center of a 360 degree panoramic 'bowl' of distant higher elevations, creating an impression it is the hidgest point in the locality.
Some have described the view as being similar to the structure of a wheel, where Sky Rock is the center and the distant hills make the rim in all directions.
